Damage Triage

What kind of dent or scratch are we looking at?

Every job on this page starts the same way: work out what the metal needs and what the paint needs, then price only that. These are the six kinds of damage that roll through our Brooklyn shop most, and what each one takes to put right.

Door Ding

A shallow round dent from another car door in a parking lot, with the finish still whole over the top of it.

The fixWorked back out from behind the panel wherever there is access, so the paint on the car stays the paint that left the factory.

Body-Line Crease

A longer dent that runs through a character line, usually from a pole, a shopping cart, or a low wall.

The fixBrought back in stages so the line reads straight again, then filled thin, primed, and refinished across that panel.

Bumper Scuff

Plastic scraped open by a curb, a post, or a tight parallel park, deep enough to show the gray underneath.

The fixSanded back, filled with a flexible material where the cover tore, primed, then sprayed to match the panels either side of it.

Keyed Panel

A long narrow line cut past the clear coat, often running the whole length of a door or across two panels.

The fixCut back, filled where the line is deep, sealed and refinished on that panel, then blended into its neighbor so no edge shows.

Paint Transfer

Another car's paint left sitting on top of your finish after a rub, with your own color mostly intact underneath it.

The fixCompounded off in a lot of cases, which makes this the lightest job on the page and the one worth checking before you assume the worst.

Dent With Bare Metal

A dent that cracked or chipped the finish on its way in, so there is steel showing at the bottom of it.

The fixMetal first, then primer and color, because bare steel starts to rust the moment road salt and rain reach it.

Heavier damage that reaches structure or several panels moves over to collision repair in Brooklyn, and rust, panel replacement and everything else on the body sits with our auto body repair team.

A door ding should never cost you a whole panel.
We fix what got hit and leave the rest alone.

The Fingernail Test

How deep is that scratch?

Depth decides the whole job, and you can measure it yourself in about two seconds. Run a fingernail across the line. What it does next tells you which of these three you are dealing with, and roughly what the repair involves.

01Clear coat only

Your fingernail glides straight across it. The line sits in the top protective layer, above the color, and it usually looks like a scuff that keeps reappearing after every wash.

The fixPolished out in most cases, with the original factory paint left on the car and nothing sprayed at all.

02Into the color

Your nail catches slightly, and down inside the line you can see color that reads lighter or duller than the panel around it.

The fixCut back, filled level, sealed and refinished on that panel, then the fresh color is blended outward so the repair has no visible edge.

03Down to primer or steel

Your nail catches hard and the line looks white, gray, or shiny. That shine is bare metal, and a Brooklyn winter finds it fast.

The fixSealed and refinished ahead of the lighter jobs, because every day of road salt and rain on exposed steel turns a paint job into a rust job.

Swirls, haze and light wash marks across a whole car are a different service again, closer to paint correction than to a dent job. Refinishing that covers several panels runs through our car painting booth.

Paintless Dent Repair

When a dent comes out without new paint

Paintless dent repair, PDR for short, is the technique of working a dent back out from behind the panel with specialized rods, so the original factory finish is left completely alone. Three conditions have to line up for it: the paint is unbroken, the metal is neither stretched nor sharply creased, and somebody can physically reach the back of the panel. Shallow door dings in the middle of a flat door are the textbook case.

Plenty of Brooklyn parking-lot damage misses at least one of those three. A crease sitting right on a body line, a panel packed with foam and bracing, a ding that chipped the paint on its way in: each of those needs the traditional route of metalwork, thin filler, primer and a refinish blended into the panels beside it. That is the bulk of the dent work we have been doing here for over a decade.

So bring the car by before you spend anything. We look at the panel, tell you which route the damage needs and why, and if your dent turns out smaller than you feared, you will hear that from us too.

Real Work

One panel, in and out

This Acura came in with the rear quarter and the bumper cover pushed in. The blue marker is ours, from the damage walk-through that gets written into the estimate before a single tool comes out.

White Acura RDX rear quarter panel dented and bumper cover removed before dent and scratch repair at Exclusive Collision & Repair in Brooklyn, NY Before
Same white Acura RDX with the rear quarter panel straight and refinished after dent and scratch repair at Exclusive Collision & Repair in Brooklyn, NY After
Quarter panel pulled straight, bumper cover refitted, and the fresh color blended into the door beside it.

Cosmetic damage rarely stays purely cosmetic once you look behind it. A pushed-in quarter can hide a bent bracket, and a scraped bumper can hide a snapped sensor mount, which is why the walk-through matters more than the first glance from ten feet away. Anything we find gets photographed, written down, and explained to you before the estimate is finished.

The dent is the easy part.
Matching the paint is the craft.

Common Questions

Dent and scratch repair in Brooklyn, NY: FAQs

The questions drivers ask us most about dings, creases and scratches.

How much does dent repair cost in Brooklyn?
There is no flat rate, and a price quoted over the phone before anybody sees the car is a guess. Four things move the number: how big the dent is, whether the finish is broken, which panel it sits on, and whether anything behind the panel got bent. A shallow ding with the paint intact is the small end of the range. A creased door that needs filling, priming and refinishing sits higher, because the fresh color has to be blended into the panels beside it for the match to hold. Bring the car in or send photos and you'll get a free written estimate with the reasoning spelled out.
Can a deep scratch be buffed out?
Only if it stayed inside the clear coat. Run a fingernail across the line: if your nail glides over, polishing usually lifts it. If your nail catches, the scratch has cut past the clear into the color or further, and polishing from there just thins the finish while the line stays put. At that depth the panel has to be filled, sealed and refinished. We'll run the test in front of you so you can feel which one you're dealing with.
What is paintless dent repair, and when does it work?
Paintless dent repair, PDR for short, is a technique that works a dent back out from behind the panel with specialized rods, leaving the original factory finish untouched. It applies when three conditions line up: the paint is unbroken, the metal is neither stretched nor sharply creased, and there is real access behind the panel. Shallow door dings and hail-style dents are the classic candidates. A crease sitting on a body line, a panel with foam or bracing behind it, or any ding that took the paint with it needs the traditional route of metalwork, primer and refinishing. Bring the car by and we'll tell you which category yours falls into.
Will the new paint match the rest of my car?
Matching it is the job. Every car carries a factory paint code, and a finish shifts over years of sun, salt and washing, so we mix to the code and then tint against the panel itself. The fresh color is sprayed with PPG products in a heated downdraft booth and blended outward into the panels beside the repair, so there is no hard line where new paint meets old. We check the panel in daylight before the keys go back, because a match that passes under shop lights has to pass on the street.
Does a door ding mean repainting the whole panel?
No. We repair the damaged area and blend the fresh color outward into the surrounding metal so the transition disappears, which uses far less material than a full respray and keeps more of your original finish on the car. Repainting a complete door or quarter panel only earns its keep once the damage runs across most of it. If your job is bigger than a ding and the refinish covers several panels, that work runs through our car painting booth.
Should I put a dent or a scratch through insurance?
It comes down to the size of the repair against your deductible. If the estimate lands near what you would pay out of pocket anyway, plenty of drivers settle it directly and skip the claim. Once the number climbs past the deductible by a real margin, a claim usually makes sense, and where you have the car fixed has no effect on your premium. New York law also gives you the right to pick your own shop no matter which one your insurer suggests. We deal with claims every day, so bring us the estimate and we'll walk both paths through with you.
How long does dent and scratch repair take?
Cosmetic work sits among the quicker jobs in a body shop, and paint sets the pace. Refinishing needs prep, spray and cure time, and a color blend across two panels takes longer than a single spot repair. If a bumper cover or a panel has to be ordered in, the part decides the schedule. You'll get a realistic timeline with your estimate and an update if anything shifts, so you're never calling us to find out where your car is.
Can you fix a keyed car?
Yes. A key cuts a long narrow line straight through the clear coat and often into the color or the primer under it, typically running the length of a door and sometimes carrying on across the next panel. The line gets cut back, filled where it runs deep, sealed and refinished on the affected panel, then blended into its neighbor so the repair has no edge you can find. Where the metal underneath got creased on the way through, that comes out first.
Do you fix bumper scuffs, or only metal panels?
Both. Plastic bumper covers scuff and gouge more easily than metal, and they repair well: the area is sanded back, filled with a flexible material where the cover tore, primed, then sprayed to match the panels around it. A cover gouged all the way through, or one with its mounting tabs snapped off, gets replaced and refinished. Parking sensors, cameras and trim that live in the bumper go back where they belong before the car leaves the shop.
