Bumper repair
in Brooklyn, NY
fixed or replaced.
A cracked or pushed-in bumper can often be repaired and refinished. One that’s torn through gets an OEM replacement instead, painted to the factory code so it matches the fenders on either side. Bumper repair at Exclusive Collision & Repair starts with a free written estimate that tells you which one yours needs, and why.
Which bumper damage can be fixed?
A lot of bumper damage that looks serious comes out with a repair and fresh paint. What decides repair or replace is the damage itself, meaning how far the plastic split, whether any of it is missing, and what got hit behind the cover.
Scuffs and Scrapes
RepairCurb rash, a scrape off a garage post, the corner that clipped a parking meter. The plastic underneath is whole, so it gets smoothed out and repainted.
A Crack or Split
Usually repairA clean crack with no plastic missing can usually be repaired and refinished, and you keep the cover that came on the car.
Torn Mounting Tabs
DependsThe cover hangs low or opens a gap at the fender because the clips and tabs behind it snapped. Sometimes those can be repaired, and sometimes too many are gone and a new cover is the cleaner fix.
Pushed In or Bent
DependsBumper plastic can often be reshaped. How far it folded, and what it hit behind the cover, decide whether that is enough.
Torn Through
Usually replaceA cover with a hole through it or a piece missing is usually replaced, and the new one is painted to match the car.
Damage Behind the Cover
Replace the partA bent reinforcement bar or a crushed energy absorber gets replaced, never patched, because those are the parts that take the next hit. You can’t see either one until the cover comes off.
Damage that runs past the bumper into the hood, the headlights or the frame is a bigger job, and the bodywork side of it is handled as auto body repair in Brooklyn. A frame rail bent behind the reinforcement bar gets measured and pulled back to factory spec as car frame repair.
Plastic bends and mostly comes back.
The foam behind it stays crushed.
A torn front bumper, put back
This Lexus NX came in with the front bumper torn open at the corner and pulled away from the fender. In the after photo the bumper is back in line with the fender and refinished, with the parking sensors in place.
Before
After A bumper has to match the fenders beside it
A bumper cover sits right up against two fenders, so any difference in color shows at both seams. We mix the paint to your car’s factory paint code and blend it into the fenders beside the bumper, and the shade carries across without a hard line where the new paint starts. The finish also has to stay put when the plastic flexes, which a bumper cover does every time it gets nudged in a tight parking spot.
Fit is the other half. The gap between the bumper and each fender should run even from top to bottom, and the cover should sit level with the headlights and the grille. That comes down to the brackets and mounting tabs behind it, and a cover bolted onto a bent bracket won’t sit right however good the paint is.
This G-Class came in with the black front bumper corner and the fender flare above it scraped and gouged. A parking sensor sits in that same bumper close to the damage, and a sensor that near a scrape is one more thing to check before the repair is called done.
What sits behind a bumper cover
The bumper you see is a painted plastic cover, and there are four more layers between it and the frame of the car. A hit that only scuffs the cover can still crush, bend or snap one of them, so the cover has to come off before anybody can say for sure what the repair involves.
Bumper cover
The painted plastic shell, shaped to the car, that most people mean when they say bumper. It’s built to flex and spring back from small bumps, which is why a damaged one can often be repaired.
Energy absorber
A block of foam or a plastic honeycomb that soaks up a low-speed hit. Once it crushes it stays crushed, even after the cover in front of it pops back out.
Reinforcement bar
The metal or composite beam bolted to the ends of the frame rails. This is the part doing the real protecting, and a bent one gets replaced.
Brackets and clips
Brackets, clips and mounting tabs hold the cover in line with the fenders and headlights. When one breaks, the cover sags or leaves a gap at the seam that you notice every time you walk up to the car.
Sensors and wiring
Parking sensors, radar units and the wiring harness that connects them. They’re mounted in or behind the cover, so a hit to the bumper can knock them loose or out of aim.
When the bumper carries radar or cameras, they get checked once the cover is back on, and where the manufacturer calls for it, they’re reset with ADAS calibration at our Brooklyn shop.
The bumper is the first thing people see on a car.
Yours should look like nothing ever happened to it.
